Great War Losses

There can’t be any family in the UK that didn’t suffer some bereavements during the great war. Remembered below are those members of our families who lost their lives fighting for King and country in WW1.

  • Kenneth Boag - killed in action on 25th September 1914. Kenneth was a private in the 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders (reg. no. 8024), was Mentioned in Despatches and received the DCM posthumously. He was gazetted on 20th October 1914 (London Gazette of that date, page 8388). His death is commemorated at the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial in France. Kenneth was born on 18 September 1889 at Ascog House, Kingarth, Bute the eldest son of my wife’s grandfather Kenneth Bogie and his first wife Elizabeth Sim.
  • Arnold James Hawkes - killed in action on 15th June 1915. Arnold was a private in the 3rd Battalion Royal Fusiliers (reg. no.2840). His loss is commemorated at the Harlebeke New British Cemetery in France. Arnold was the youngest son of George Hawkes and Alice Wood of Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex - George was the 11th child of Joseph (Laddy) Hawkes and Emma Carder (my great, great, grandparents). Arnold was just 17 when he died. Thanks to Marijke for sending me a photo of the grave.
  • Gordon Alfred Hawkes - killed in action on 14th September 1914, aged 24, when he was a rifleman in the 1st Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps (reg. no.7500). Gordon was the 13th child of my great grandfather John Joseph Hawkes and Elizabeth Collis of Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex. His death is commemorated at the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial in France.

There are several other Hawkes and Barkers on the war memorial at Burnham-on-Crouch, but as yet I have not been able to identify them for certain as family members.
